How to choose the right colour for your floor

The aesthetics of your business premises will have an impact on your employees and customers alike. Interior decorators and architects will both agree that choosing a floor colour or pattern will set the scene for the entire room. It can be a rather big decision, so whether you’re choosing carpet, carpet tiles, vinyl or timber flooring, here are some things to consider during the process of selecting the right colour:

Size of the room

Just as white walls can make a room look bigger than it actually is, different colours on the floor can impact the perceived room size.

If you have a large space, but would like it to look warm and cozy, you may consider dark or light wooden tones on the floor. For smaller spaces, you can make them feel much bigger using light colours like beige and pale grey tones.

Existing colour schemes and design

Are you re-flooring an existing premises but not replacing other design features, such as wall colour and furniture? If this is the case, you’ll want to factor in all existing colour schemes, and the mood you’re trying to achieve. If the walls have blue undertones, you won’t want to pick carpets with certain green undertones – that will clash and affect the coherence in the room.

Colours and atmosphere

If you’re starting from scratch or doing a complete renovation, you will still want to factor in the big picture. What atmosphere are you trying to create? It needs to be harmonious from the floor, to the walls and the furniture.

Light colours will give your space a happier, brighter feel. If you’re aiming for peaceful, then grey tones are the way to go. For a natural, rustic finish, choose a brown palette. Looking for luxury, elegance and sophistication? Go with black features and trimmings. Black floors can also create a theatrical, contrasting edge for those with a flair for the dramatic.

Lighting

When you choose a flooring colour, it’s a good idea to keep samples and check how they look at different times of the day. The light in your office or building will change as the day progresses. The carpet will also appear differently under artificial light. A flooring choice that looks amazing during the peak of daylight may not be as cohesive with your plans when the outdoor lighting is a littler dimmer or when the electric lights are switched on.

When you choose flooring for your commercial building, it’s important to keep the complete picture in mind. Don’t be overwhelmed by the all the options available. Once you know what look and feel you’re aiming for, it’s a lot easier. Using colours appropriately will help to achieve your goals, as the flooring will be central to the plan.
